Description
In every human heart is an instinctive craving to be like God. It was the promise of satisfying this ambition which made the serpent’s temptation so appealing to our First Parents. This same desire is at the root of all the evils which we are witnessing in modern-day society. The desire is not wrong in itself, but it must be pursued in the right way. In the fulfilment of that desire lies all our happiness.
The Devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus reminds us of the fact that God created man in His own image and likeness. That divine likeness, lost by sin, can be restored by grace. The choice is ours. To grow in grace, to increase in our likeness to God – to become God by participation, as theologians express it – is at once the final end of the Holy Face Devotion and our only means of practicing it.
The Carmelites of the Holy Face are a small community of contemplative nuns based in County Cork, Ireland.
